Kaolin is an important clay mineral that plays vital roles in our environments and many geochemical processes, including soils. It is also a widely used industrial mineral that plays an integral part in our everyday lives since it is ubiquitous in many products we use daily. These include but not limited to printing and packaging paper and paperboard, paint, plastics, ceramics (including ceramic filter and proppant), fiber glass, rubber, ink, high strength cement (including concrete and geopolymer), catalyst, and pharmaceutical. This workshop will be presented in a tutorial format and designed for students, young scientists, and any professionals who wish to learn about the roles kaolin play in natural environments and processes as well as industrial applications. Tentativley, the following topics will be covered:
1. Workshop Overview
Prakash Malla, Director of Research & Development, Thiele Kaolin Company, USA
2. Structure and Properties

Advances in the characterization of smectites in bentonites
Workshop Leader: George E. Christidis
Technical University of Crete, School of Mineral Resources Engineering, 73100 Chania, Greece
christid@mred.tuc.gr
Bentonites are very important industrial clays valued by the industry due to the unique properties of smectites. The workshop will present recent aspects of geological/geochemical characterization of bentonites and advances in the characterization of smectites using traditional and novel approaches and is addressed to young and experienced researchers and PhD students. Of particular importance are the description of heterogeneity of smectites, and the determination of key smectite properties, which control both conventional and novel industrial and environmental applications. The main topics of interest will be presented by invited lecturers with long experience in the field of smectite and bentonite research. In addition, we invite researchers and postgraduate students to submit contributions for oral and poster presentations. The topics which will be covered in the workshop, and main presenters are the following:
1.Geological/geochemical characterization of bentonites
George E. Christidis & Warren Huff
2.Traditional and novel methods to distinguish smectite-types by X-ray diffraction.
George E. Christidis
3.Methods for determination of the layer charge of smectites.
George E. Christidis, George Chryssicos, Arek Derkowski, Emmanuel Joussein, Stephan Kaufhold
4.Methods for determination of ion exchange in bentonites.
Reiner Dohrmann & Christian Weber
5.Thermal analysis of smectites.
Arek Derkowski
6.Advances in Electron microscopy for the study of smectites.
Wen-An Chou & Anne-Claire Gaillot
7.Molecular modeling of interaction of smectite surfaces with various molecules.
Andrey Kalinichev, Jeff Greathouse & Randal Cygan
8.XRD modelling of smectite-water interaction on bentonite research
Bruno Lanson & Eric Ferrage
AIPEA Early Career Clay Scientists (ECCS) Meeting
6:00 PM July 26 (Tuesday), 2022
Per person price: Free
17th International Clay Conference (ICC 2022), İstanbul, Turkey
Location of workshop Hilton Istanbul, Maslak
Leaders: Liva Dzene and Guanzheng Zhuang
liva.dzene@uha.fr and sizhoutufei@163.com
Hilton Maslak Istanbul Hotel at 18:15
This inaugural meeting will be held in two phases:
Meet the Editors of our clay science journals: With increasing number of publications, it can be overwhelming for an early career scientist to choose an appropriate journal to publish one’s work. The aim of the workshop is to present the journals of clay community, and incite early career researchers to communicate their findings, and become the reviewers for these journals. We plan to invite the Editors of “Clays and Clay Minerals”, “Applied Clay Science” and “Clay Minerals” to present their journal and share the best practices for preparing a good manuscript and a good review of an article. After the presentations, the discussion with the audience will be organized. The questions from ECCS community would be collected before the event, and the discussion would be built based on the questions collected, followed by a discussion with the audience.
How to write a good research proposal: To fund the research projects, early career researchers must apply for grants and submit the research proposals in response to different institutional, national and international calls. In some graduate programs, writing a research proposal is a mandatory exercise, but such a requirement is not common worldwide. The goal of the workshop is to provide early career researchers with a “beginner’s toolkit” how to design a successful research proposal. Two confirmed researchers with an experience in successful proposal writing will be invited to give a presentation on their suggestions, where to begin, what aspects to include in the proposal and share their thoughts about what they would do differently if they would be starting their career today.
“If the workshop is canceled because of an insufficient number of participants, the paid registration fee will be fully refunded”.
VENUE: İstanbul Technical University (ITU), Faculty of Mines
All conference workshops and school will be held at the Faculty of Mines building in İstanbul Technical University (ITU) Campus, Maslak, İstanbul. The rooms where workshop will be held are on the ground floor of the building. Signs will direct participants upon arrival.
There are two entrances/exits to/from the M2 Metro ITU-Ayazaga station. If you are coming from the Hilton-Maslak side, you must pass underground through the Metro Station to the ITU side. Do not try to cross the street above ground! If you come by Metro, then use the southwest ITU exit, which directs you to the ITU campus (see images above to guide you). Please inform the ITU gate guards that you are an AIPEA workshop participant and that you are going to the Faculty of Mines building. They will let you through the gate. It is about a 5 minutes walk from ITU Metro entrance to the Faculty of Mines building. If you arrive by taxi, then the driver will inform the gate guards you are being dropped off at the Faculty of Mines building (in Turkish you can say “Maden Fakultesi”).
